Kozhikode: The Union Ministry of Surface Transport has approved the project for the development of the road from Kozhikode to Muthanga in Wayanad at a cost of Rs.292 crore. Land acquisition will cost another Rs.275.74 crore. A presentation of the project was made at a meeting of people's representatives and officials on Monday by the Bangalore-based Wilbur Smith Associates Private Ltd.
The 112 km stretch will be converted to a two-lane road. The work is proposed to be executed on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.
The Centre will contribute 40 per cent of the project cost as grant, the rest will have to be borne by the firm awarded the contract. There will be two toll booths on the road for toll collection — one at Tamarassery and the other before Meenangadi.
The work is expected to be commenced in 2011 and completed in two years time.
